I grew up between Mississauga and Oakville, Ontario. Art has always been where I translate what's hard to put into words — not as an escape, but as an honest way of making sense of things. I believe there's dark inside the light and light inside the dark, and most of what I make is really just me choosing, piece by piece, which way to sway.
I've been painting for six years now, moving across acrylic, watercolor and gouache, mixed media, digital work, and photography. People regularly find symbols and meanings in the work that I never consciously placed there — I've stopped being surprised by it.
Over that time I've sold more than 60 original works directly to collectors — no gallery, no ads, just the work finding its people. That part still means the most to me. But I'm ready for it to reach further, which is part of why I'm opening up more of the collection now.
Painting is where I live, but not the only room in the house. Under the name John Paul Jakub, you'll also find my photography, a fashion project (stupidexpensive.com), music, and writing. The paintings themselves carry my full name — Jakubowski — as their signature.
Thank you for taking the time. I hope we get to talk soon.
